Studios are where the argument actually happens. Art Real NY covers contemporary art at that level, spending time with painters, sculptors, video artists and installers while the work is still unresolved. Coverage takes in the galleries and project spaces that show it, the fairs that price it, and the artists who have not yet had a solo. Readers are collectors, curators, students and working artists who want to know what is being made now, in whose hands, and out of what materials.

The house form is the profile. That means a visit, a recorded conversation and a look at the work on the wall before it is lit and captioned. Writers ask about stretcher preparation, ground layers, edition sizes and studio rent, because those answers explain a practice better than a statement does. We publish no reviews written from a press release, no ranked lists of artists to watch, and nothing arranged in exchange for access.

Art holds criticism and the longer material essays; Artists is the profile file itself. Exhibitions reports on shows as they are hung and de-installed, and Galleries follows the dealers, program changes and representation news behind them.
